SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Should Businesses Focus on in 2026?

Someone looking for a real estate marketing partner in Pune opens ChatGPT instead of Google. They get a paragraph back, three agency names, a line on each. Then they move on.

No results page. No ten blue links. No visit to your website.

That happens at real volume now, which is why the SEO vs AEO vs GEO question has moved out of marketing forums and into budget meetings. Owners want to know whether the SEO retainer they’ve run for four years still makes sense.

It does. It’s just no longer the whole job.

The one-line difference

SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you quoted. GEO gets you recommended.

SEO is still doing the heavy lifting

SEO is the work of ranking your pages in Google and Bing: keyword research, technical health, site speed, internal linking, backlinks, content depth. None of that has become irrelevant.

Roughly 65% of Google searches now end without a click. That sounds like bad news until you see which clicks survive. The ones left skew toward transactional and local intent, people who already know what they want. Informational queries lose clicks. “Emergency dentist near me” does not.

There’s a second reason SEO stays on the list. AI engines mostly pull from content that’s already indexed and crawlable. If Googlebot struggles with your site, ChatGPT won’t magically find you either.

AEO is about being the answer, not the link

Answer Engine Optimization means structuring content so a machine can lift a clean answer out of it and display it: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice results, Google’s AI Overviews.

According to BrightEdge data from February 2026, AI Overviews now trigger on close to 48% of tracked queries, and around 83% of those searches end without a click. You can be annoyed about that, or you can make sure the answer on screen is yours.

In practice AEO is fairly boring work: question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words underneath, FAQ and How-To schema, comparison tables, and original numbers nobody else has. Machines reward writing that gets to the point. So do humans.

GEO is about being the brand the AI trusts

Generative Engine Optimization is the newest of the three and the least settled. The goal is to be cited, named, and recommended inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.

The mechanics differ from Google’s. Language models don’t rank pages, they assemble an answer from sources they treat as credible. So the levers are ones SEO teams historically ignored: how often your brand gets mentioned on sites you don’t own, whether your business details stay consistent everywhere, review volume, listing presence, appearing in third-party roundups, and a clean factual About page a model can parse.

Volume from AI search is still small next to Google. Quality is another story. A Seer Interactive study found ChatGPT-referred traffic converting at around 16%, against roughly 1.8% for Google organic.

This matters more in India than most markets. India became ChatGPT’s second-largest user base in early 2026, with roughly 100 million weekly active users. Your buyers are already asking these tools for recommendations.

So where should your budget actually go?

There’s no universal split, and anyone quoting you one is guessing. A rough starting point from what we see across client accounts:

A local service business, say a clinic, a car dealership or a builder selling a project in Wakad, should keep most of its weight on SEO and local search. Google Business Profile, location pages, reviews. AEO second, GEO third as brand groundwork.

A B2B or high-consideration business with a long sales cycle should push harder on GEO. When a buyer spends three weeks researching before contacting anyone, being on the shortlist the AI produces beats position four on a keyword.

One caveat before you commit budget: GEO measurement is still immature. Attribution is patchy and the models change behaviour without notice. Treat anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers with suspicion.

How we think about it at Digital Tokri

We’ve run digital campaigns for nine years across 300+ clients in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, with 200+ websites built and over 12 lakh leads generated. We’re a certified Google and Meta Partner agency, and much of our work sits in real estate and healthcare, where buying decisions are slow and heavily researched. That’s the search behaviour AI is reshaping fastest.

GEO is partly a branding problem, not only a technical one. Getting recommended by an AI depends on how consistently your brand appears across the wider web, and that is brand building work. We run a dedicated branding vertical alongside SEO, content, performance marketing and web development, so positioning and technical execution sit with one team instead of three vendors pointing at each other. One client account saw organic impressions climb 126% on that combined approach.

We’re also not going to sell you a GEO package to replace something that’s still working. If your SEO is generating qualified leads, we build on it.
